Handyman or Specialist? Who to Call for Common Malta Jobs

Which household jobs suit a handyman and which need a licensed electrician, plumber or AC technician — a sorting guide for Maltese homes.

Half the delay in getting things fixed is not finding a person — it is deciding which person. Call a specialist for a handyman job and you pay specialist rates for shelf-hanging; call a handyman for a specialist job and the good ones will decline it anyway. Here is the sorting logic for the jobs Maltese homes generate most.

Straight to the handyman

  • Furniture assembly, shelves, mirrors, curtain rails, TV mounting
  • Door adjustments, locks, handles, hinges
  • Re-siliconing showers, sealing gaps, small plaster repairs and touch-up painting
  • Swapping tap heads, toilet seats, shower heads — accessories, not pipework
  • Picture rails, child-proofing, draught-proofing, small outdoor fixes

This is the territory of the batched small-jobs visit, priced in our handyman rates guide.

Straight to the specialist

  • Anything creating or modifying an electrical circuit — new sockets, board work, fault-finding. That is a licensed electrician, and the licence guide explains why the paper matters.
  • Anything on pressurised water or drainage — leaks, heater installations, blocked mains. That is a plumber.
  • Anything inside an AC's sealed system — regassing, leak repair, compressor work. That is an AC technician; handymen may clean filters, nothing further.
  • Gas appliances — appropriately qualified professionals only, no exceptions worth making.
  • Structural work — removing walls, cutting into beams, anything an architect should see first.

The judgement calls

Light fittings. Like-for-like swaps on an existing point are commonly done by handymen; anything involving new wiring, no earth, or vintage installations goes to the electrician. If the handyman opens the rose and frowns, respect the frown.

A leaking tap. Washer and cartridge swaps sit in handyman range; anything needing the floor opened or pipes cut does not. Our dripping tap guide covers where the line runs.

Painting. A wall or a touch-up, handyman; a whole flat with prep, a painter — see the painting cost guide for when the specialist earns their rate.

Bathroom silicone versus bathroom leaks. Silicone is cosmetic-protective and squarely handyman work. Water appearing where it should not is diagnosis work — plumber.

The cheapest correct answer

Describe the job honestly and let providers self-select. On Qabbad your request goes to approved providers in the relevant category covering your locality; if you have picked the wrong category, replies will tell you quickly — a plumber looking at your photo of a hairline tile crack will say "that is silicone and a handyman" before anyone drives anywhere. Photos do the sorting better than any theory.

Frequently asked questions

Can a handyman do electrical work in Malta?

Like-for-like accessory swaps are commonly handled by handymen, but new circuits, board work and fault-finding are regulated electrician territory. A good handyman declines those jobs — that refusal is a quality signal.

Is a handyman cheaper than a specialist?

For handyman-appropriate jobs, meaningfully: €15 to €30 per hour against specialist call-outs and rates. For specialist jobs the comparison is moot — the wrong trade done cheap gets done twice.

What if my job is a mix?

Post the full list anyway. Providers reply flagging what they cover; a renovation-adjacent handyman often coordinates the odd specialist task, or you book the electrician for their hour and the handyman for the rest.
